BART has officially rejected Valley Transportation Authority’s latest plan to help overcome some of a $1 billion to $2 billion funding gap in the San Jose BART extension project – saying the proposal could endanger safety.

A top official with BART says the plan dramatically reduces the scale and function of the downtown maintenance yard for the downtown San Jose project – and that could hinder BART’s ability to operate the $12 billion extension safely.

In a letter earlier this month, BART’s assistant general manager for operations, Shane Edwards, rejected the proposed $340 million cut in spending for the year. He also criticized VTA for not consulting BART before going public about a “significantly” scaled down facility.
