Brownsville ultra long-distance runner Art Hurtado ran to a 20th-place finish Aug. 17 in the Leadville Trail 100, the highest 100-mile race in the United States and known as the “Race Across the Sky.”

Hurtado finished in 22 hours, 30 minutes, 23 seconds in what he said was his best performance to date at the ultra marathon distance. This was his ninth 100-mile race.

“I actually feel the best physically that I’ve ever come out of a race,” Hurtado said on Aug. 21. “Usually after a race with this much elevation change my body is pretty beat up, but I feel pretty solid, so I think my training went fantastic. And during the race everything was on point even though the later miles were really difficult.”

The race is 50 miles out and 50 miles back outside the Colorado silver mining town of Lea
