Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) has reportedly patented a widebody aircraft designed to compete with Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner. The development comes as Russia’s aviation sector, hit by Western sanctions following the invasion of Ukraine, seeks to reduce its reliance on Western-made aircraft.

According to the Russian news agency TASS , the new widebody will be offered in three variants, including a “basic” model, as well as shortened and extended versions. Documents cited by TASS indicate that the aircraft is expected to deliver lower operating costs than the Boeing 787-9 .
