CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (WPRI) — A federal detainee at the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility was sentenced Tuesday to 12 months in prison for having contraband, according to acting U.S. Attorney Sara Miron Bloom.
Anthony Whyte, 50, pleaded guilty in May to charges of conspiracy and providing and possessing contraband in prison.
In May 2023, Whyte took multiple documents from a visitor which appeared to be contaminated with a substance, prosecutors said. One page was later found to contain synthetic cannabinoids.
Authorities seized the papers and envelope moments after he received them.
Prosecutors said Whyte arranged for the pages to be delivered during calls from inside the detention center. He was originally being held on unrelated criminal charges out of Connecticut.
