NEW JERSEY (PIX11) — A scam alert was issued on Tuesday to warn New Jersey residents of fraudulent calls related to an electric bill credit.
The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities said it has received reports of these scam calls posing as utility representatives requesting personal and financial information in order to "sign up" for the credit.
What is the credit?
The recently approved $100 universal bill credit was introduced as a way for New Jersey residents to manage high energy costs.
The NJBPU said no legitimate representative would call customers to enroll them in the program. The credit is automatically applied to eligible accounts, distributed as two $50 installments on September and October utility bills.
