SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — One person has been arrested after an older individual being scammed in San Angelo led to the discovery of criminal activity believed to have caused approximately $51 million in losses in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
The SAPD reported that, on July 24, the department "responded to a report of financial abuse of an elderly resident" after the victim "reported being targeted in a sophisticated computer scam in which the suspect claimed to represent a government agency."
The SAPD said the elderly resident "was led to believe his computer had been locked and was instructed to withdraw $900,000 from a local bank to purchase gold bars." Suspects would collect the gold from the victim through four separate meetings that occurred in San Angelo.
