CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A nationwide search is underway for the next chief of police for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
The department's next chief will take over in 2026 after the departure of Chief Johnny Jennings, who announced in May that he was retiring on Jan. 1, 2026. Jennings' retirement follows a controversial $305,000 settlement he received from the Charlotte City Council over a public dispute with former council member Tariq Bokhari.
Jennings became CMPD's chief in July 2020. He began working with the department in May 1992. Jennings took over for Kerr Putney, who retired from the position after five years in the role.
CMPD has touted a gradual decrease in violent crime each year of Jennings' tenure.
