CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Legendary NASCAR promoter H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler was honored by friends and family as he was laid to rest in Charlotte on Tuesday. Wheeler, who was the longtime president of Charlotte Motor Speedway, died last week. He was 86.
Family, friends and the NASCAR community gathered at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in south Charlotte for a solemn ceremony honoring Wheeler. Following the funeral, a reception was held at Charlotte Motor Speedway, where those who knew Wheeler best celebrated his life as only they could.
"He didn't touch just one fan, he touched a generation of fans," retired NASCAR driver Kyle Petty said. "It continued generation after generation."
