AMHERST COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) - A change is happening in cafeterias across Virginia.

Instead of opening bags and reheating food, Amherst County schools are putting free scratch-cooked meals on the menu with students helping to decide what’s served.

What’s on a child’s lunch tray will shape more than just a school day. It can shape their health, their focus, and even their future.

For families in Amherst County, where nearly 4,000 students are served every day, free scratch-cooked meals are on the menu.

“We realize that for some students, most of their nutrition is received at school, so we want to make sure that our meals are as nutritious as possible and also as appetizing for the kids,” said Kim Klein, Child Nutrition Supervisor with Amherst County Public Schools.
