WASHINGTON D.C., DC — The Trump administration's federal surge in the nation's capital is also leading to a surge in criminal cases that is overwhelming the DC court system.

Legal experts consulted by WUSA9 say arraignment hearings are seeing the largest surge. After arrest, an arraignment is the initial appearance in a misdemeanor case.

On Monday, the arraignment cases in DC Superior Court started at 1:30 p.m. and did not end until after 1 a.m. Tuesday morning. There were 135 people on the arraignment list. A lockup list obtained by WUSA9 on Aug. 13 had only 62 names.

A DC law expert who spoke to WUSA9 on background called this inhumane for the judge, attorneys, and the people facing charges.
