FLORENCE COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) -- Starting on Labor Day, South Carolina will have a new statewide law requiring drivers to be hands-free when using devices.

Back in May, Gov. Henry McMaster signed it into law, banning drivers from holding or supporting a mobile electronic device while operating a vehicle.

Drivers will not be allowed to use a mobile device to read, compose, or send text messages, emails, or other forms of text communication. That also goes for watching videos, movies, games, or engaging in video calls.

Drivers can still use devices hands-free for calls or navigation when legally parked, also during emergencies, or if they are first responders. Mounted devices can be used for navigation or audio, and the law does not apply to CB radios or commercial two-way radios.
