An honorary street naming ceremony is scheduled for noon on Sunday, Aug. 31, at the intersection of N. New York Avenue and E. Cox Avenue to recognize the contributions of the late Wilbur and Effie Blake.

Wilbur and Effie Blake are remembered as influential members of their neighborhood, known for their commitment to education, faith, and community involvement.

Mr. Blake was instrumental in creating the first softball diamond at Peoria Stadium, a development that led to the formation of the area’s first African American softball teams. He also provided transportation for neighborhood children to attend school when he was not working.
