TWO HARBORS, Minn. (Northern News Now) - The ambassador to the North Shore is 65, 20 feet tall and has had a little work done over the years.

New York City has the Statue of Liberty to welcome people to America.

Two Harbors has Pierre the Voyageur to welcome people to the North Shore.

“He’s been standing there for quite some time, welcoming people into the lovely town of Two Harbors,” said Ellen Lynch of the Lake County Historical Society.

The Voyageur Motel put Pierre up around 1960.

He was intended to be a rival to the moving, talking Paul Bunyan statue in Brainerd.

Similar to Paul, Pierre could talk to kids who bought a special token.

“Kids would go up to Pierre and turn the token in, and then the person in the booth would talk for Pierre,” said Sandra Fritz of the Earthwood Inn,
