PORTLAND, Ore. — Increasingly in recent days, President Donald Trump has taken it upon himself to direct National Guard deployments within U.S. borders.
Over the weekend, it was announced that Idaho will be one of 19 states deploying National Guard members , ostensibly to assist with immigration enforcement and crime at the behest of the president. Overall, there will be a total of 1,700 troops in the nationwide mission.
For now, it appears that Guard members from Idaho will only represent a small part of the mission, and in an administrative role rather than appearing out in the streets, as seen in Washington, D.C. This weekend, the majority of the more than 2,300 troops stationed in D.C. began carrying weapons , M17 pistols and M4 rifles.
