M. Jay Niemeyer has been selected as the new fire chief for the Southern Boone County Fire Protection District.

Niemeyer brings over 35 years of experience in the fire service, according to a Facebook post shared by Southern Boone Fire District.

Shared in the post, he began his career as a volunteer in 1990 with the Boone County Fire Protection District and is concluding 24 years of service with the Jefferson City Fire Department, where he currently serves as an assistant chief.

His experience also includes 7 years as a paramedic in Columbia and 4 years as a firefighter with the Lee’s Summit Fire Department the post shared.

He serves as a safety officer for Missouri Task Force 1, the FEMA Urban Search and Rescue team, and is qualified as a planning team manager.
