On this date in 1994, Carrie and Jack Wandler’s famous borscht from their Dickinson, N.D., restaurant impressed Good Morning America producers and would be featured live on national TV, bringing their long-guarded family recipe nationwide attention.

Carrie and Jack Wandler have no idea how ABC Television found out about their borscht.

But somehow they did. And a few weeks ago, producers from Good Morning America traveled to Jack’s Family Restaurant in Dickinson, N.D., to sample it for themselves.

“They heard about it somehow out in New York,” Carrie said Friday. “I asked them how they found out about it, and I didn’t get a definite answer. They just said, ‘Word of mouth.’”
