(WENY) -- Gov. Kathy Hochul signed a new law this week requiring every college campus in New York to have a Title VI anti-discrimination coordinator.
The coordinators will work with students, faculty, and staff to address incidents of racial bias, antisemitism, or other forms of discrimination. Hochul says the goal is to create a safe learning environment where no student has to fear for their safety while getting an education.
The law directs the New York State Division of Human Rights to develop training programs so colleges can enforce protections under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Title VI prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, or national origin, including shared ancestry or ethnic characteristics.
