Travelers will soon be able to see the new Terminal 1 at the San Diego International Airport.

After beginning construction in November 2021, the $3.8 billion project will open to the public on Sept. 22.

"In 2024, we serviced 9.8 million people coming through that airport [old Terminal 1]; it was never designed to service that many people," said airport spokeswoman Nicole Hall. "We knew we needed to build a new airport that offered more space and represented San Diego."

The new Terminal 1 will have a total of 30 gates, improved food and retail concessions and a baggage system capable of handling 2,000 bags per hour during peak periods.
