CALHOUN FALLS — A debt-plagued town that's operating without a budget and is hundreds of thousands of dollars behind on water payments did something that would be unremarkable for most municipalities.

It paid its bills.

Or at least it has for the past two months, said Stephanie McElrath, Calhoun Falls' municipal clerk of court, serving as acting clerk/treasurer while the town of roughly 1,700 people searches for a permanent hire for the role.

She was also able to say how much the town had in the bank — that is, the amount that was in the bank Aug. 25 before cutting checks — during the Calhoun Falls' Aug. 25 council meeting, providing a financial report that has proved a rarity for the town, which is 60 miles south of Greenville .
