A long-standing seat policy from Southwest Airlines will be soon changing, leaving some plus-sized travelers in the lurch.

The airline has a long-standing policy in which passengers can purchase two seats on a plane, and then apply for a refund on the second ticket. As the airline prepares to switch over to having assigned seating for the first time in its history, it is changing this policy, making the refund protocol more strict.

According to the airline’s policy page , the refund will only be issued when a flight departs with at least one open seat. Both seats purchased also need to be in the same fare class, according to the new policy.

If a flight is sold out or an adjoining seat isn’t available, then customers who need a second seat would be rebooked on a different flight.
