JACKSON, Miss. – Governor Tate Reeves has declared Friday, Aug. 29, 2025, as Hurricane Katrina Remembrance Day across Mississippi on the 20th anniversary of the historic killer storm, honoring the lives lost and the strength shown by communities in the storm’s aftermath.

To mark the occasion, Reeves is calling for a statewide moment of silence at 8:29 a.m. — a nod to August 29, the date Katrina made landfall at 6:10 a.m. as a Category 3 hurricane. The tribute is meant to reflect on the pain endured, the resilience shown, and the long road to recovery that followed the assault of the 120 mph sustained winds and 30 foot storm surge.
