CONWAY — The fiery crash on S.C. Highway 22 last week that killed two people, ignited an SUV and sent a Jeep into the Waccamaw River was caused by a dump truck plowing into standstill traffic at 65 mph, according to newly released records from the S.C. Highway Patrol .

Jimmy Roberts, the Conway -area dump truck driver, was cited for driving too fast for conditions and a seatbelt violation, according to a Highway Patrol report and online court records. Roberts could not be reached for comment.

The report provides limited details about what led to the Aug. 20 crash, which remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.

State law prohibits drivers from traveling too fast for current road conditions. Those can include traffic and inclement weather, according to the S.C. Department
