A public hearing will be held soon on proposed water and sewer rate increases for the Piney River water and sewer system, a Nelson County-owned utility that county officials are working to position for transition to another entity in upcoming years.

The Nelson County Board of Supervisors recently discussed three options for phasing in the rate increases to eventually equalize with those the Nelson County Service Authority (NCSA) charges, deciding on a route that has the least costly effect on customers in the next six years.

The system includes a water and sewer force main line along Virginia 56 West from the wastewater pump station down Virginia 151 serving numerous areas in the Piney River community. The system has 206 customers as of March — five for water only, 18 for sewer only and
