KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - When visiting Zoo Knoxville, you may come across Joe the Sloth right above your head. Joe is considered a free-range animal.
“So this is Joe. He is our six-year-old Linnaeus two-toed sloth. He actually just celebrated his birthday,” said Bird Keeper Rebecca Zeigler. “He spends about 95% of his life hanging upside down. So, Joe is built to have that upside down lifestyle. So things like his circulatory system, his digestive system is kind of like mirror images of ours. It helps them efficiently digest while being upside down because gravity, aids and processes like that.”
Joe can be seen climbing his tree in the Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Campus (ARC). Spending that much time upside down makes you wonder how he stays that way comfortably.
