NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — A husband and wife from New Bedford were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly defrauding people seeking insurance through the couple's business, BL Insurance Brokerage, LLC.

U.S. District Attorney Leah Foley's office said Brendan Lawler, 58, and Lisa Lawler, 45, were each charged with wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

According to court documents, from March 2023 to March 2024, the Lawlers solicited and collected insurance payments from their clients. These payments should have then went to the clients' insurance providers.

Prosecutors allege that instead of paying the insurance companies, the couple used the money for their own purposes. The couple is also accused of keeping the company and the scheme afloat by using incoming client funds to pay
