WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. (WV News) — Gov. Patrick Morrisey plans to unveil an ambitious energy strategy Thursday aimed at more than doubling West Virginia’s electrical generation capacity by mid-century.

Todd Johnston, the governor’s deputy chief of staff and Energy, Infrastructure and Competitiveness director, previewed the plan Wednesday during the first day of the West Virginia Chamber’s Annual Meeting and Business Summit.

“Energy is central to the governor’s economic development strategy,” he said. “In broad strokes, the plan is to increase our current capacity from 16 gigawatts to 50 gigawatts by 2050 — ‘50 by ’50.’ That’s easy to remember, right?”

The goal will be reached through focus on “base-load electric power generation,” Johnston said.
