WINCHESTER, Ky. (WKYT) - An area that was once just undeveloped land is now a new access point for the Winchester community to get around town more easily.

The Fulton Road extension is officially open to traffic.

The road closed signs had been in place on Fulton Road for quite some time, but on Wednesday, they were pushed aside.

It’s 1,800 feet of roadway, and while that might not seem like much, the city says it was difficult to construct.

Mayor JoEllen Reed and other city leaders gathered to officially open it.

“This is only the beginning,” said Reed. “We want progress, we want growth and, trust me, we’re actively working to pursue both of those in the City of Winchester.”

This project was discussed for more than 50 years.
