KENTUCKY (WKYT) - For today’s Good Question, Sandy asks: When a new Kentucky statute goes into effect, how long does the cabinet or state agency that is governed by the new law have before they start abiding by the new law?

They don’t have any time at all. Unless there is a provision in that law to delay enforcement, once it’s in effect, anyone it impacts is expected to abide by it.

However, when it goes into effect could also vary.

Section 55 of Kentucky’s constitution states that bills take effect 90 full days after the legislature adjourns. This year, that was June 27.

The main exceptions are if the bill includes an emergency clause. In which case, it becomes law as soon as the governor signs it, or their veto is overridden.
