WASHINGTON — Wednesday marked a shift for Mayor Muriel Bowser as the President Donald Trump's ordered federal surge stretched into its third week.

The takeaway for the mayor: the increase presence of federal agents in the District is driving down crime in DC. She also emphasized that the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) needs 500 more officers to continue to maintain the lower crime numbers reportedly brought on by the surge.

Data provided by the mayor's office shows that during the period of Aug. 7 through Tuesday, violent crime has decreased 45% compared to the same time last year. Property crime dropped 12% according to the data released Wednesday.
