GREENSBORO, N.C. — A fit check is when you are showing off your outfit. On the first day of class in colleges across the nation, students posted on Instagram their 'fits'. Social media is part of life, and marketers and scammers are watching these feeds closely.

Typically, what we see is that someone receives an unsolicited message from someone who is alleging to represent a brand or an organization," said Josh Planos, Better Business Bureau.

As the semester begins, experts warn that students are the target of numerous financial scams:

-fake scholarships

-fake apartment listings

-fake credit card offers

-online shopping scams

-the lure of being an influencer
