A 25-year-old man was seriously injured early today after a Honolulu police officer collided with his moped at an intersection in the Ala Moana area, police said.
The crash happened about 4 a.m. when the officer, who was traveling south on Pensacola Street with his blue pilot light illuminated, ran a red light at the Kapiolani Boulevard intersection and struck the eastbound moped, according to HPD’s Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section.
Police said the moped rider, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown onto the roadway and taken to an area hospital in serious condition.
The officer remained at the scene and was not injured. Investigators have not determined whether speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in the collision.
