SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — Metal awnings are being installed on San Angelo's historic Cactus Hotel, replacing the striped fabric awnings that were once a hallmark of the building. But how did the change come to be?
A Concho Valley Homepage reporter observed on Aug. 26 that workers were mounting new metal to awning frames on the hotel. City Planning & Development Services Director Aaron Vannoy stated that installation of the metal began "in the last few weeks," while the frames had been installed over the last six months.
An approval letter for a request to replace 18 cloth awnings with metal awnings was given to the building's owner in September 2023. The letter states that the Design and Historic Review Board approved the request in January 2023 on three conditions:
