MADISON (WKOW) -- State legislators introduced new gun safety legislation on Wednesday that would make public university campuses gun-free zones.

Sen. Kelda Roys (D-Madison) and Rep. Brienne Brown (D-Whitewater) announced the legislation at the State Capitol.

According to a press release, "Current law stipulates that any person carrying a firearm in public or privately owned university buildings is guilty of a Class A misdemeanor. However, individuals with licenses to carry a concealed weapon are exempt from this rule. Under this bill, university campuses will be afforded the same gun-free zones as our K12 campuses."

The call for gun reform has been an ongoing effort in the Wisconsin legislature for years. Brown noted the precedent set by other states who have implemented similar laws.
