CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Corning Fire Department has been classified as a Superfund site by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
A DEC investigation revealed that the Chemung River Bank behind the property contained a high concentration of metals. Boron, a common byproduct of fiberglass manufacturing was also discovered in ground water on the property. Glass manufacturing waste, including ash, brick and glass were also found by investigators.
Officials say the fire department was classified as a Class 2 site, meaning the soil and groundwater poses a significant threat to public health and the environment.
