The Shenandoah County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday shot down a possible funding bump to a volunteer fire and rescue company.

Vice Chair Steven Baker and supervisors David Ferguson, Dennis Morris and Timothy Taylor voted against a motion to increase the amount the county contributes to the New Market Fire and Rescue volunteer organization by $69,000. Chair Josh Stephens and Supervisor Karl Roulston voted in favor of the motion.

The meeting sparked heated arguments among the members over the concerns of fairness in how the county treats the 12 volunteer companies.
