BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. (WSAV) — A 16-year-old student was detained after he brought a gun on Battery Creek High School's campus Wednesday, officials announced.

There were no direct threats made to students or staff, a school spokesperson said. According to an email sent to parents, any student found to have a weapon on campus will face "severe consequences, including criminal charges."

The 16-year-old was detained by the School Resource Officer (SRO) before being transported to the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice (SCDJJ), a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office spokesperson said.

"Possessing a weapon on school ground is a serious offense that results in disciplinary and legal action," a school spokesperson said in an email to parents. Weapons are prohibited on all Beaufort Count
