TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV/Gray Florida Capital Bureau) - Starting this fall, drivers convicted of deadly DUI crashes in Florida will face harsher penalties.

A new law, known as Trenton’s Law, doubles the maximum sentence for repeat offenders from 15 years to 30 years. It was inspired by the family of Trenton Stewart, a Stetson University football player killed by a drunk driver in Jacksonville in 2023.

Trenton would have turned 21 this weekend.

“I think Rob and I both agree that we as a state could have done better and prevented Trenton’s casualty,” Mandi Stewart said. “He was a protector. He was always happy, always had a smile on his face.”
