HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (WSAV) — A historic piece of Hilton Head Island's past is getting a big boost and a brand-new building to celebrate the land and its people.
Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park officially broke ground on its new archaeological research facility and auditorium Wednesday.
Mitchelville is the first self-governing community for formerly enslaved people in American history.
"I learned about Mitchelville. I came out here and walked the land," said South Carolina State Senator Tom Davis. "At that point in time, it was just an idea and a concept and a piece of history that needed to be rediscovered.
