POWELL COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A proposed nickel tax is on a lot of people’s minds in Powell County.

A nickel tax is a tax that generates five cents per $100 of assessed property value in a district.

The Powell County School Board says these funds could go toward improving its athletic facilities. However, some people are arguing against it and want the public to have a say in this matter.

Bettering Powell County Schools is what Superintendent Sarah Wasson says a nickel tax can do.

“There have been numerous statements of ‘everybody but Powell has these things for their kids, but why not me?’” said Wasson.

Specifically, Wasson says this proposed tax could fix the track that is no longer regulated for meets and add a baseball field, which the district doesn’t have.
