JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Downtown parking lot is getting a new purpose: housing the city’s most vulnerable.
The Sulzbacher Center, in partnership with Jacksonville Fire and Rescue, has transformed the lot into a small village of ten transitional homes. The project comes in response to Florida’s new law, HB 1365, which makes it illegal to sleep in public spaces.
Rahieem Clark, who once lived on Jacksonville’s streets before finding support through Sulzbacher, says housing like this could be life-changing.
“They’ve helped me a lot since I’ve been here, they treat me like a human being and make me feel good, they help a lot of people out,” said Clark. “I feel like it would be better to get homeless people off the streets so they can have somewhere to stay and a roof over their head.”
