JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Department of Transportation is requiring Jacksonville to remove six painted crosswalks and street murals that the state says do not meet traffic control standards. The city has until Sept. 4 to take action or FDOT could remove the markings itself and charge Jacksonville for the costs.
The noncompliant locations include intersections at Lomax Street in Riverside and Children’s Way in San Marco. Public Works says contractors will be hired to remove the artwork, at a cost of approximately $22,000. One crosswalk, at Children’s Way, was funded with taxpayer dollars, while the others were funded by private groups.
Business owner James Joyce, who works in Riverside, expressed his opposition to the removals. “These efforts could be put towards helping the people
