PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Roman Catholic Bishop of Providence Bruce Lewandowski was "deeply saddened" to learn of the deadly shooting that unfolded at a Minnesota Catholic school Tuesday morning.

"It's just horrific ... that this has happened again," Lewandowski told 12 News. "They were there to celebrate a new school year."

Students at the Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis were celebrating Mass on their third day of classes when the gunman, 23-year-old Robin Westman, fired dozens of rounds through the church's stained glass windows. Westman killed two children, ages 8 and 10, and injured 17 others before taking their own life.

Though the deadly shooting happened more than 1,000 miles away, Lewandowski said the tragedy's impact knows no bounds.
