SPOKANE, Wash. — As soon as next month, Spokane law will make it illegal for federal immigration agents to enter some community events without a warrant.

But those protections may not apply to several popular celebrations. The city clarified with KREM 2 News on Wednesday that the ordinance does not apply to events like "Tacos y Tequila."

The ordinance is still awaiting the mayor’s signature to take effect, but Immigration Attorney Hector Quiroga says the law will be narrow in its scope and protections.

“The city and state officials can’t really limit federal authorities. The best they can do is put guidelines," said Quiroga.

The ordinance expands existing city law to protect non-public events held on city property, blocking warrantless entry by immigration agents.
