CLAY COUNTY, Mo. (KCTV) - An aircraft accident has resulted in an emergency response Wednesday afternoon in Clay County.

The Excelsior Springs Fire Department said it happened north of the Midwest National Air Center, near Mosby, Missouri.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office said preliminary reports were that a small plane crashed near NE 140th Street and Rhodus Road in rural Excelsior Springs. Authorities said the crash happened as the plane was trying to land. It had taken off from a different airport.

When crews arrived, a Cessna C340 was engulfed in flames. The Sheriff’s Office said they believed there were two people on board the flight.

Just after 1:30 p.m., authorities said two people died in the crash.

Residents were asked to avoid the area.
