MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The City has filed a counterclaim against the Memphis Fire Fighters Association and the Memphis Police Association, the latest in the disagreement between the City of Memphis and two of its unions.

The city now filing challenges against the legal standing of union agreements. It asks the court to rule that the mayor holds sole authority over wages, promotions, and employment policies.

So, how did we get to this dispute? "If they came and gave the firefighters 2 percent like they promised, like they earned, like they put in writing, there would be no reason for a lawsuit," said Thomas Malone, president of the Memphis Fire Fighters Association.

Last month, Malone said the city of Memphis is not living up to what had been promised.
