Longtime WDSU reporter Heath Allen was the only television reporter embedded with emergency officials in St. Bernard Parish when Hurricane Katrina hit 20 years ago. Advertisement

The entire parish was destroyed by the hurricane, and Allen and the late photojournalist Tom Fitzgerald captured some of the only video and interviews as rescues were happening across the parish.

He reflected on those crucial moments captured by his camera.
