NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - The Wilson County mayor is pushing for gun safety after signing a proclamation this week highlighting the importance of properly storing firearms.
Mayor Hutto says almost daily, a child gets their hands on a firearm in the U.S., which leads to an accidental shooting. Now he’s asking for those buying guns to also buy the safety gear needed.
As students head back to school, safety is a top concern, with a priority of keeping guns away from children.
“The data is really clear. When kids and guns are together without supervision,” said Dr. Alanna Truss, who is a psychologist and the state lead of Be Smart, a nonprofit focused on keeping communities safe.
