MESA, Ariz. — For the past few years, violence among teenagers has become a growing issue across the Valley.
While cities like Chandler and Queen Creek continue to see high levels of teen offenses, data shows parts of Mesa are experiencing some of the largest increases, raising concerns about youth violence and mental health.
Katey McPherson, who works with youth on their mental health, and Bridget Vega, a community advocate, are both East Valley moms. They have witnessed the rise in teen crime firsthand.
“It’s actually very alarming,” Vega said.
“I think our community has been very surprised,” McPherson added.
Maricopa County juvenile courts data shows the biggest surge in juvenile referrals since 2020 is happening in Mesa, particularly in ZIP codes 85207 and 85208.
