Defending VHSL Class 1 state cross country champion Shelby Stanley picked up where she left off.

The senior crossed the finish line in first place during the girls race at Wednesday’s Through the Pines Invitational in Lebanon. Stanley clocked in at 20:29.58.

It was her first meet of the 2025 season.

“I thought overall it was pretty good,” Stanley said. “Definitely good to see what I need to work on moving into the season.”

Is there any pressure being the defending state champ?

“Just knowing there’s a lot of people coming for the title and knowing how much work you have to put in and how much I want to be right back there,” Stanley said. “I can see all three of those in a way, but still just the same as always in just going out and leaving no doubt.”
