PROVIDENCE – In urban planning, walkability refers to how pedestrian-friendly a space is, factoring in safety, convenience and the overall enjoyment of traveling by foot.

In 2024, Providence was named the second-most-walkable city in the country in USA TODAY's 10BEST Readers' Choice Awards . The city was nominated by a panel of travel professionals who weighed pedestrian accessibility alongside Providence’s food scene, leisure offerings and places for tourists to stay. The real estate company Redfin also granted Providence an impressive walk score of 76 out of 100 for posh strolls in neighborhoods such as College Hill and Federal Hill.
